A fairly simple cache, this is a short walk or ride from the main road near Foster.
The bridge that you will find here is part of the Great Southern Rail Trail, a trail currently running 52km from Leongatha in the north to Foster in the south. Once it is completed, it will continue all the way through to Yarram for a total length of 93km.
The original railway was opened in 1892 and connected Dandenong to Yarram and Woodside. The trains carried mostly dairy products, pigs and sheep, newspapers and mail, fertilizer, fish, timber, machinery, beer, groceries and people. When the railway was closed in 1992, due in part to competition from road transport, it was only carrying supplies for the oil fields in Bass Strait.
Alongside the trail there is a diversity of plant communities, including wetlands, swamp scrub, lowland forest, damp forest and heath - there are important remnants of the vegetation that was here before agriculture changed the countryside.
The cache container is a small brown container. It contains toys, a logbook and a pencil. Please replace the container exactly as found to avoid muggling.
NB: YOU DO NOT NEED TO CLIMB ON THE OLD BRIDGE TO ACCESS THIS CACHE. THE BRIDGE IS CONDEMNED AND ACCESS IS NOT ALLOWED.
