A nice pull off overlooking the Middletown Valley between Frederick
and Hagerstown, MD, this boulder marks the National Trail over
which traveled Gen. Edward Braddock and Lieutenant Colonel George
Washington 1755. The marker is on Old National Pike (U.S. Alternate
40) west of Ridge Road, on the left when traveling west.
The marker was placed on the outside of a curve in the road to be
visible in the distance in both directions. Parking is available at
both ends of the pull off with the bolder itself is protected from
errant drivers by a guardrail partition. The boulder itself was
moved here from a less safe and accessible place further east on
the roadway on August 25, 2009 to it's present spot. Those who wish
to read more about this monumental move may do so by accessing the
following link.

An art nouveau typeface is used for the inscription below a
bas-relief of Washington and Braddock standing, and a third figure
resting on his knees behind Braddock. Perhaps this third figure is
the Delaware Indian Chief Nemacolin, who blazed the original trail
from Cumberland to the Monongahela river.
The cache you seek is located nearby to this marker and contains
nothing more than a stash note and a couple of logsheets, but no
stylus, so BYOP. Please be aware of traffic and know where your
children are AT ALL TIMES! If at all possible, leave them in the
car while you find the cache. Have fun!
While reading the roadside marker take the time to note the answers
to the following questions:
1. Who erected this marker?
2. What year was it erected?
While not necessary to claim a "find" on this cache those who wish
to may e-mail answers to me via my profile. No answers (even if
encrypted) on the cache page please.
