Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at the Karel Landman monument between Patterson and Alexandria. The monument was built in 1938 to commemorate the centenary of Landman’s departure on the Great Trek. A committee was created in the mid thirties to mobilize the local communities to maintain and become active in culture festivals. The monument was designed by Gerhard Moerdyk in the form of a globe with a wagon drawn by an span of oxen over South Africa. It symbolizes the Great Trek of the 1830’s. Landman in 1837 lead a large group of English speaking and Afrikaans Voortrekkers out of this area.

The monument is situated at Kolrand, 25 km from Alexandria. If you are travelling from Port Elizabeth to Alexandria (R72), turn left on the R342 to Paterson and drive through the low hills. The road continues to the N2 from Grahamstown to Port Elizabeth. Be carefull when nearing the monument, the turn-off is not marked and can easily be missed.

A church service is held at the monument annually on 16 December.
The cache is a small Floro margarine tub.

The original position of the cache has changes. The original site was cleaned and regrassed. The new cache is a camped micro container which can hold very small items, has a pencil and logsheet. Thanks to Jeni and Anton for replacing the cache!

Please replace the container exactly as it was found, together with it's cover.
