The placing of this cache may serve as a cautionary tale about
the problems you can create for yourself by leaving home without
your GPSr.
The day I placed this cache, I did exactly that. As soon as I
reached into my pocket I knew exactly where my GPSr was; sitting on
the bookcase at the front door. Oops!
Unwilling to make the long trek back home, I decided that I'd do
the best I could under the circumstances to fix my position.
I stuck my walking stick in the snow and used its built-in
bubble level to make sure that it was exactly vertical.
I aligned my Brunton compass so that it was exactly due north
(not magnetic north, mind you) of my walking stick. When the centre
of the stick's shadow was directly in line with the centre of the
compass, and the length of the shadow was at its shortest, I shot
the sun with my sextant and came up with an angle of
15.75258855555556°. (Yes, I carry a sextant; and a pocket transit
too, for that matter. Doesn't everyone??? 
) Luckily, my watch is automatically
set from the NIST atomic clock and has millisecond accuracy so I
was able to determine that the time was exactly 12:37:41.140. The
time zone is exactly what it should be.
