The cache location changed and we will put another cache at our original choice in the Spring." Benny's Big One" is placed in honour of "Mom" who was the last teacher to teach at this school when it closed back in 1941. It was fun to have mom with us when we planted this cache and hear the stories of an 87 year young former teacher tell us of times past. The cache is located on the edge of the Old School grounds of "Glen Eagle School"
Olive Leaf was the first name suggested for the school but it was named Glen Eagle after the creek that flowed nearby to the South of here. The school was built in 1910.The school closed in 1941. The building was used as a church on Sundays during the Spring,Summer & Fall. Meetings and social gatherings usually took place in the school house--it was the center of the community. In the fall of the year after harvest there would be a fowl supper. A cook house from a threshing outfit would be hauled to the school, close enough so the food could be passed thru the window to the school room. At Christmas there was always a concert and Santa would make an appearence to the squeals of the kids as he gave out bags of candy and gifts. There were dances as well in the school.Everyone attended even the babies---we could go on and on and on.Those days are gone and the school like all the old schools of the era are boarded up or gone. This old school is now used as a granary. The name plate from the front of the school is now located in the museum in Harris.Take time to visit this "hidden gem" in small town Sask.if you get a chance.
Also check out "Bent's View" cache close by to the North of here.
