A small camo'd cache hidden just off the Solar Walk. There is no need to go into the Loblolly Park woods as the cache is hidden on the right-of-way, not past the treeline. You will need to park across the street at West Side Park and take a bit of a stroll up the sidewalk (come prepared to walk about 1.5 miles round trip).Very kid friendly and educational too. Be very discrete in retreiving and returning the cache as there is high muggle traffic along 8th Ave.
Along a unique stretch of roadway that borders Hogtown Creek Park, one can find the “Solar Walk”. This scaled-down version of the solar system makes for a fun and educational stroll. Plus if that’s not enough exercise for you, Hogtown Creek Park (aka Loblolly Woods) offers some beautiful nature trails (as well as several more caches) all just around the corner from one of the busiest areas in Gainesville.
The Solar Walk just seemed to be begging for a geocache or two. “Born of Light” is the third cache in my Mythika series on Greek mythology and is one of two associated with the Solar Walk. You will need to park across the street at the West Side Park and cross 8th Avenue at the light in order to reach the cache area. The cache is out past Neptune so come prepared to walk; it really is worth the walk just for the unique monuments to our planets. Take the time to read the inscriptions on the monuments, some of them are beautiful and/or thought-provoking.

The cache contains a log, a pencil, a few trinkets, and a travel coin for trade. For the “First to Find” there’s an un-activated Travel Bug and a “FTF” coin for you to keep.
Apollo was the son of Zeus and the mortal woman Leto. In most stories, he and his twin sister Artemis were born on the floating island of Delos under a palm tree, although he is also said to be “born in Lycia” which literally translated means “born of light”. The day of Apollo's birth was believed to have been the seventh of the month. The number seven was sacred to the god and the belief that seven is a lucky number may have arisen from this myth. Apollo was known as the god of prophecy, of plague and disease (as well as medicine), and of music, song and poetry. Because of the stories that tell of Apollo being “born of light”, he was sometimes associated with (or confused with) Helios, a Titan and the god of the sun (See Mythika 2: Helios - Bringer of Light). Apollo's name is derived from the Greek verb “apollymi” meaning "to destroy" and because of his association with numerous oracles he is often called "the prophet of his father Zeus."
Like Apollo, comets are “born of light” and have been associated with prophecy as well as with plague, disease, and destruction. Throughout time, comets have inspired dread, fear, and awe. Because comets' movements were erratic and unpredictable, it was believed that the gods dictated their motions and that they were therefore the messengers of the gods and omens of world-altering change.
We now know that a comet is a small Solar System body composed primarily of ice and dust that orbits the Sun and, when close enough to the Sun, exhibits a visible coma or "tail". Short-period comets such as the well-known Hailey’s Comet are thought to originate in the Kuiper Belt which lies beyond the orbit of Neptune.
