This cache is one of 3 placed in Mitford in Northumberland; the church of St Mary Magdalene provides the answer to all the clues for the 3 caches so this is where you need to head for. The posted co-ordinates take you to a point near to the cache but to find the actual cache site you need to find the answer to the clues. Parking is available outside the church but we wouldn’t recommend going on a Sunday morning as it gets very busy. The caches can be linked together to form a walk of less than a mile. If you do the 3 together we’d suggest making A Stile-ish view the 2nd cache and starting with either of the other 2.
Mitford lies two miles west of Morpeth on the B6343 at the confluence of the rivers Font and Wansbeck.
In the 12th century, Mitford's fords probably offered a better river crossing for travellers than Morpeth's. As a result, Mitford became a place of much greater importance than its neighbour. It was granted a market and became a borough some 50 years at least before Morpeth.
Few people notice the pant (drinking fountain) built into the wall just past "The Plough" bearing the Mitford crest of a boar's head impaled on the upright sword. Fewer still will notice the little cross cut into the parapet of the Foss Bridge near Snuff Mill. It commemorates the Rev. Isaac Nelson, Admiral Nelson's uncle who was vicar of Mitford from 1759 until on 20th March 1772 he drowned trying to cross the "steppy" stones above the bridge.
This cache is situated close to the bridge.
To find the clue you need to go to the Lych Gate, this is a covered entranceway into the churchyard. Find the year that it was erected, this will give you ABCD.
The cache is located at N 55° 0D.B3C W00A° 44.004
