Cupules are small depressions in rock. Because they can be formed by grinding or pounding, cupules can be a remnant of Native American activity. The cache is hidden on a rocky point that overlooks Newport Bay and the San Joaquin Hills, an area known to be populated by Native tribes such as the Gabrielino. If you look around on this point, you will find cupules in several of the flat rocks, some of them several inches deep. I'm not an archaeologist, so I don't know whether or not these cupules were made by humans or not, but it is fun to think about the presence of native Southern Californians in this area before Europeans showed up.

The container is suitable for geocoins and small travel bugs.
