illinitrekker's First Year Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

AthensCVB: Since we are phasing out the accessible portion of the Athens County Geo-trail, we are renaming the cache to its original name (we adopted the placement from StarWarsFan98) to allow illinitrekker to retain his first big milestone and archiving this one. It served us well.

Geocache Description:

NOTE TO CACHERS: The Athens County Geotrails will end July 1 in preparation for the launch of the new Athens County History Geotrail. Most of the caches will still be available, but the geocoin incentive will no longer be available. Thanks for the great response to our first two trails. We hope you enjoy what is still to come.

A stop on the accessible series of the Athens County GeoTrail. You are seeking a medium-sized lock-and-lock container. The container has a pen, but bring a writing instrument just in case. Swag will be available. Please trade even or trade up. Be sure to carefully return the container to its hiding spot.

Note: this cache replaces illinitrekker's First Year. If you previously logged a find for that cache, you may log another find, simply visit the cache to obtain the key word, or skip this cache and e-mail us beforehand for the key word.

About the Athens County GeoTrail

Welcome to Athens County! To introduce you to all we have to offer, the Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to sponsor the Athens County GeoTrail, which features both a traditional version and one that is fully handicap-accessible. Each trail series is designed to take you on a tour of Athens County with its historical communities and natural beauties. In order to claim the Athens County GeoTrail geocoin (reproduced above), cachers must complete all the caches in one series (note: if you are able, we ask that you complete the traditional trail) and either the corresponding accessible or regular puzzle with the key words printed in red inside the cache container. Redeem your completed puzzle for a geocoin at one of the following locations:

Athens County Convention & Visitors Bureau (M-F, 9:00a-5:00p)
667 East State Street
Athens, OH 45701

Holiday Inn Express - Athens
555 East State Street
Athens, OH 45701

About This Location

A very unique spot at a crossroads in Athens County. The town itself appears to be a sleepy little hamlet, but summer finds plenty of activity as folks put in on the Hocking River for access to the Ohio River. Coolville was named for the Ashel Cooley family and is situated between two other temperature-related communities (Torch and Frost).

Completing the GeoTrail

Once again, if you are able, we ask that you complete the traditional series and reserve the accessible series for our caching friends that may not be able to complete caches with slightly higher difficulty/terrain ratings. We will operate on the honor system. The accessible series consists of eight caches, of which two are multi-stage and one is a letterbox hybrid. The traditional series consists of ten caches, of which one is a multi-stage and two involve short hikes. These caches are placed at sites throughout the county. Actual driving distance and time will depend on the route you choose. Caches were numbered sequentially across both series suggesting the order of completion. Cachers are encouraged to log caches in both series. However, you may only claim one coin even if you complete both series. There are numerous non-trail caches available along the way. A public route (AthensCounty by illinitrekker) is available to generate pocket queries before attempting the trail(s). We suggest a distance of three miles either side to get all caches. Plan to spend at least a day in the area completing your selected trail series. If you are from out of the area, there are motels in Athens and Nelsonville and camping is available at Burr Oak State Park (Glouster), Lake Snowden (Albany), and Stroud’s Run (Athens).

Trail completion requires signing the physical log at each cache in the series and recording a key word (located on the inside of the lid of each container) on your passport puzzle. The caches are all family friendly and not difficult to find or approach. If you have trouble locating the cache, please use the hint. Some caches may involve a short hike. Official passports can be downloaded using the links above or via the official Athens County GeoTrail website (see Related Web Page link above). You may also obtain a passport in person at the Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau during normal operating hours (M-F 9:00a-5:00p).

A total of 200 special edition trackable geocoins are available to registered geocachers completing either of the geotrails, one geocoin per caching handle. Please honor this limit in order to maximize opportunities to obtain our coin. In order to receive your prize, take your completed passport to either the Athens County Convention & Visitors Bureau during normal business hours or Holiday Inn Express at other times. In order to measure the success of these geotrails, we ask that you complete the information portion of the passport.

Acknowledgements and Websites

Funding for the special edition geocoin came from the Athens County Convention & Visitors. They also provided much of the swag. The series was inspired by the Black Walnut Geotrail. We wish to thank WVAngler for his assistance helping us get started. Local cachers Cteam, fishingohio, GeoJunkie, Heavy Metal, illinitrekker, and RandomRansom volunteered their time for cache placements and maintenance. Cache containers were donated by Heavy Metal, illinitrekker, and Lowe’s of Athens. Logbooks were donated by illinitrekker. Owners or managers (in the case of parks) of the properties where caches are located have given their permission for the cache placements.
