MG_7000 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

roelsch: It's time for this one to go, after two years and 110+ smiley faces. Mean Gene is quickly approaching the 150% mark from 7000.. 10,000 has been passed and 10,500 would have been in the bag except for Christmas and New Years falling on Saturday.

Thanks for all who have stopped by, and, poignantly, thanks to Le-Roy, the first one to post a note on the cache, who is no longer with us. -- roelsch, St. Charles, MO.

Geocache Description:

An easy Florissant microcache in honor of Mean Gene's 7,000th cache find.

Parking is available across the street. The cache is very close to a busy street and should be easy to find -- so be cautious, and watch for both cars and muggles!

This cache is placed to recognize the finding of cache #7000 ( In Memory of Our Good Friend) by Mean Gene on 27 December 2008.

There is a Mean Gene 7K Quadrant Geocoin to celebrate the occasion, but it is not likely that you'll get to see it out in the wild, since it was dropped in the #7000 cache and then immediately picked up and taken home by Mean Gene.

This cache is placed about a block north of the beginning of the Florissant section of The Great Rivers Greenway and features a gazebo at the southern terminus, not far from the historic Old Saint Ferdinand Church, built in 1820, which is adjacent to the Coldwater Creek Commons park, one of my favorite places for a lunchtime walk.

One of the interesting features of this old church is the spire, with three crosses arranged vertically:

  • the lower one, in brick,
  • the middle one, in shingles (look closely!),
  • the traditional upper one, on the top of the steeple.
The cache is placed near Coldwater Creek, which was recently the target of cleanup efforts by civic-minded friends and neighbors following an unusual flash flood that sent water over the banks and into nearby apartments and businesses (and parks!). For details, check out the recent article in the Suburban Journal.

For those who are interested in waymarking, the clock near the bike trailhead is a registered Waymark of our geocaching friend, BruceS.
