Introduction
Number three in our Florence Nightingale collection, although this has no direct connection with Florence other than it's (just) inside the Dethick, Lea & Holloway Parish - and its a lovely spot with excellent views.
The cache is a 1 litre sandwich box.
Some more history
The cache is at the site of the Shuckstone Cross. This was a marker post situated at the intersection of pathways from Tansley to South Wingfield and Ashover to Lea/Dethick. All that remains today is the stone base with some carved symbols on it. The name Shuckstone survives from Domesday (1086) when it was in the form Scochetorp, probably a mis-spelling of Scochetorn, Shuck being one of the demons of Anglo-Saxon mythology.
The stone base is at N 53° 06.656 W 001° 29.328
Access
The site can be accessed via the various footpaths leading to it or by roadside parking at N53° 06.745" W1° 29.543" and then taking the marked footpath up the hill towards the cache site - about a 5 minute walk. Note The cache located a short distance from the actual stone base
