KREMLIN
Een Kremlin betekent letterlijk een vesting en dient om een gedeelte van een stad te beschermen tegen vijanden.Alleen het centraal gedeelte, met kathedraal en paleis van de stadsheer, werd met muren beschermd. Het was bovendien heel vaak het enige stadsdeel waar gebouwen niet van hout, maar van (bak)steen gebouwd waren. Niet alleen in Moskou staat een kremlin maar ook in tal van andere Russische steden staat of stond een Kremlin.
