Geocache Description:

Plane or Bird Spotters' Viewpoint

In all honesty this is not on first appearances the most attractive of locations and spoiled by the amount of fly tipping. If you practice CITO take a large or very large bag! And take care that you don't cut yourself!

But it does have the advantage of being near the plane spotters' base at the East end of Liverpool John Lennon Airport runway 27 and has a good view of the widest part of the Mersey Estuary with the shore line below frequented by many species at high tide though when I laid the cache all I saw was an Oystercatcher below and a large flock of Lapwing over the fields behind.

This road you came in by is Dungeon Lane but the name has nothing to do with prisons. It seems likely that it comes from the Old English Dunge or Denge, meaning land of, or next to, the marsh. In the area near the plane spotters raised car park there was a salt refinery in the late 17th Century and remains of stone work and of workers cottages can still be found in the undergrowth. There are also remains of the quay which was later used as a ship breaker's yard. Much more information can be found in Mike Royden's Local History Article at (visit link) .

If you had continued along past Oglet years ago, it would have taken you back to Speke but the construction of the new runway cut this off near the control tower. It is hardly worth going further as the views of the airfield are better back at the "official" viewing area which you passed on the way in.

I have shown the Spotters' Car Park as an additional waypoint but limited parking is also possible adjacent to the cache.

PLEASE TRY NOT TO DAMAGE THE COVER
