Rabbit Woman
Following the theme of unusual individuals.
It is not possible to give the exact location to the event
Mary Toft came from Godalming. In 1726 it was claimed she had given birth to rabbits, and numerous repeated births. She was arrested and imprisoned as an impostor. The claim was aided by her surgeon, John Howard. Who either thought it to be true, or was in on the deception. She was arrested and imprisoned as an impostor. She was later discharged, no further prosecution being made. It was again reported in 1727 that Mary was breeding once more.
We have avoided the full details, but if you wish to know more, check the web.
Was it a Hoax, or was it True.
One thing is for sure a number of physicians did not get rabbit pie, they had to eat humble pie instead.
When you pass down these country lanes, take care, you may see one of Mary’s relatives sitting on the verge.
