Geocache Description:

Situated outside Catawba County's oldest newspaper.

This cache rests outside the current location of Catawba County's oldest newspaper, The Observer News Enterprise. First published as a four-page edition February 9, 1879, The Newton Enterprise, as it was then known, made Catawba County one of only 13 North Carolina communities that received a regular newspaper at that time. Since its first edition, the newspaper has ultimately incorporated other regularly published newspapers in Newton, including The Catawba County News, The Newton Observer and the Catawba News Enterprise. Some of those various incarnations were produced around the nearby Court Square in Newton, including at the current site of Claremont Office Supply. The current facility is dedicated to the long-time publisher of the newspaper Charles H. Mebane Jr., who played a prominent role in Catawba County's history. Mebane's family ties run deep through the liftetime of The O-N-E. Today's newspaper serves citizens throughout eastern Catawba County, including Newton, Conover, Maiden, Claremont and Catawba. The Newton newspaper headquarters is also home to the "good news" publication, Outlook, created in 2003. Bring your own pen - this is a log only find. PLEASE LOG DNFs. FTF honors to Slickrick.
