9. Railroads When the railroad finally came to Clallam County in 1914 you could go to Seattle from Port Angeles in four to four and a half hours for a $2.25 ticket. The line dropped the full passenger train even before the depression in the 1930’s. The last passenger run ended April, 1, 1931. The steam train gave way to a gas engine “doodlebug,” called by many “the galloping goose” in an effort to save expenses. It only lasted for 70 years before being replaced by large trucking firms and good highways.
