Geocache Description:

Presents this geocache highlighting a bit of the history of our beautiful city and the surrounding valley.

This cache is located on Thomson Spit.

Died 1860

Single Gravesite with a wooden cross-surrounded by a iron railing. Probably this is not the original marker. There are different versions of the Captain Thompson story. All agree that he was aboard a ship (either What Cheer or Glimpse) that departed from San Francisco in 1859, that he bypassed Portland, OR. Presumably due to small pox aboard and that he died aboard and was buried on the beach west of Diamond Point, WA. Articles thrown overboard infected the local Indian population causing many deaths.

You need to park at the top of muscle beach road this is a steep road and need to be in good physical shape. This is a good Mile round trip.

This geocache site should only be attempted by avoiding high tide and use should use tide table chart to figure best time.
