The osage orange is sometimes called a small tree or a large
shrub. In either case, it is a woody plant that has distinctive
grapefruit sized fruit in abundance. The osage orange earned its
name, hedge apple, when it was planted as a windbreak in the 1930s
in the US. Many of these trees were planted along hedgerows by the
WPA. The wood of osage orange is valued as tool handles since it is
very strong and as fence posts since it is very rot resistant. It
is said that the indigenous people of the Ozark region prized bows
made of osage orange wood. There is an old wives' tale that the
fruit of osage orange can repel spiders and insects although there
are mixed reports on the effectiveness of this treatment.

There is a large grove of osage orange trees along a gas
pipeline clearing that is between two stages of Wintz50's
multicache. A visit to the area should allow you to see lots of
hedge apples. Depending on the time of year, the hedge apples will
be hanging on the tree branches or scattered on the ground.
The cache is NOT hidden in one of the namesake trees but will be
somewhat easy to find nearby. The osage orange trees are at N 38
23.614 W 082 17.738. You will pass through the trees to get
to the hide. The container is a 4 X 6 lock and lock container
containing new toys and a logbook. There is also a new inactivated
geocoin as a FTF prize. This new geocoin is the first coin in the
series to be released.
Since this is a puzzle cache, the coordinates provided are for
the parking area. You can determine the coordinates for the
hide with a little science knowledge. Use the formula
below:
N 38 23.xxx
W 082 17.yyy
xxx = 500 + the atomic number of Curium
yyy = the atomic number of Holmium X the acceleration due to
gravity (in meters/seconds squared) (round your answer up)
Congrats to UmpuhDave for FTF!
