Geocache Description:

html>

Welcome to "Light at the End of the Tunnel" bucketeer's 3rd cache.

This cache is located near a length of dressed bluestone wall, the remains of Portland's Gaol, which was built in the1840's and closed in 1893.

Portland Gaol

The Gaol was used to house unemployment relief labour during the great depression in the 1930's. The men were employed to demolish the gaol in 1937-8 and reused its bluestone blocks to construct the forshore reserve sea wall.

The Portland Court House adjoins the site and can be very busy during business hours, when the Magistrate visits each Tuesday.

The cache gets it name from this tunnel which, according to local legend, that I cannot prove or disprove, connects to the Gaol site and was only discovered recently, when the current roadway was cut into the cliff face.
There is also a great playground here to entertain the kids for a while.
