Located in a remote area just off the south shore of the River Blackwater, not far from the village of Maylandsea, this cache is a pleasant walk in the summer months but can be icy cold in strong winter winds. In wet conditions the path can get very sticky. From the recommended parking area it's around a 3.5k round trip.
You will need to access the sea wall path that runs along the south east shore of Lawling Creek. There are a number of places you can do this but I'd suggest on-street parking somewhere in the vicinity of the cross-roads of The Esplanade & Marine Parade. Pick-up the path that runs opposite the Marina Bar and follow it down the steps to the right into the Marina Boat Yard. The public right of way through the Boat Yard is clearly marked with yellow lines. Follow them up the steps to the sea wall above the Marina Pontoon Moorings and you're on your way!
The concrete paving gives way to what can be a muddy path once you're passed the black wooden Sailing Club building.
At several places the well trodden path has disappeared into the creek, so watch out and deviate inland where necessary.
The cache is a normal tupperware type container approx. 175 x 125mm. Original contents: London Taxi No.1 T.B., Flip-flop Key Ring, "Wayne Rooney" England Squad collectors coin, Swiss coin (20cents), Mini Stapler from a Christmas Cracker.
The cache site is a pleasant place to rest your feet and take in the surroundings. To the North West you should be able to see the town of Maldon. It was there in 991AD that the Anglo Saxons, lead by Brithnoth, unsuccesfully fought the Battle of Maldon against the Viking invaders. NNE lies Osea Island. This privately owned island of around 400 acres is accessed via a causeway from its north shore that is covered at high tide. During WW1 it was a base for Motor Torpedo Boats. The large white building to the North East is Stansgate House, the family home of politician Viscount Stansgate and his antecedents. It is built on the site of a former Cluniac Priory.
Please ensure you properly hide the cache again from prying eyes by pulling some of the long grass across it's location.
