Geocache Description:

Cache near an old Parish Boundary Stone in Penistone.

Penistone Church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist and is built of local stone, with a square tower on the West side and is unusual in having clocks on two adjacent sides. The founder appears to have been Sweyn of Hoylandswaine, who lived in the twelfth century, but there are clues that the site was used by Christians well before then. Priests belonging to a church in Penistone are referred to in documents dating from around 1200. Part of a Saxon cross shaft (see image) was used in the construction of an internal pillar near the pulpit if you wish to explore inside. The masonry was built in a herringbone pattern and, along with other clues, helps to put the church at around 1000 years old. Other parts of the church date from the twelfth century. As with most churches, parts were added from time to time and the tower arrived about 500 years ago. If time allows you may wish to visit the St John the Baptist Memorial Garden in the Churchyard. The cache is 35mm film container with log book & pencil only and can be found close to the Boundary Stone in the churchyard near the exit to Shrewsbury Road. This is likely to be a rather busy area so stealth will be required (hence the difficulty 3 rating). Tree cover may be an issue especially in summer so the clue is a giveway. There is plenty of free parking by the Paramount Cinema on Shrewsbury Road. Thank you to Rev. David Hopkin, Team Rector at St John The Baptist Church for his consent in placing this cache. **FTF Honours goes to Meeky**
