Team_Ninja's 29th cache is located at the site of Wombat Railway Station on the dismantled Daylesford - North Creswick Railway Line. It is the 6th cache in the Closed Railway Stations of Victoria series.
The Daylesford to Nth Creswick Railway line was oficially opened on June 1st 1887. It had already partly been opened in stages and the stage from Nth Creswick to Kingston had already been opened in October 1886. The section from Creswick to Rocky Lead (Rocklyn) was opened on January 19th, 1887.
Wombat station was the 4th station from Daylesford. It was 101 miles from Melbourne and 2108 feet about sea level. A siding at the station site was opened on 26.8.1887 and in 1888 a platform with two shelters were built. The station saw train services for 65 years until it was closed in July 1953.
All that now remains of the station are two mounds where the platforms used to be. The cache is located on the Goods Platform, and across where the tracks used to be (now part of the Great Dividing Trail) is the passenger platform. If you look closely you can see bolts which used to hold the timber sleepers on the platform together sticking out of the passenger platform mound
The cache is a 500ml screwtop container spray painted green. Please ensure it is well hidden before departure. As always, watch out for wildlife and creepie crawlies. Please keep the standard of the cache high by trading fairly.
