Geocache Description:

An easy cache and dash on the outer edge of Dartmoor.

This is my first cache in my new home of Devon, and can be done as a cache and dash in the car, or while walking along The Dartmoor Way.

Hawson Cross stands on a small island between the roads from Buckfastleigh towards Holne and the hamlet of Lower Coombe. The head of the cross was known to have been built into the wall at the entrance of the nearby Hawson Farm before 1887, before the whole cross was restored in 1952 by The Dartmoor Preservation Association. Hawson Cross was probably a wayside cross - one errected by the side of a road to mark a track or route.

Next to Hawson Cross is the Stumpy Oak, one of only two on Dartmoor officially recognised as being "historic oak trees"

Contents of the cache when placed were:
a small pack of cards
a pocket calculator
a small magnifying glass
a 1/4" - 3/8" jack adaptor
a small metal puzzle
a 7" single spindle adaptor
the Hicks Red GeoPick Geocoin

If coming from Holne, you may want to stop for a pint and a bite to eat at The Church House Inn - a lovely old pub dating from the 14th Century. The Tradesman's Inn in Scoriton is also due to re-open soon.
