Geocache Description:

A magnetic black cache. First in a series of 3 along the Colne River. Accessible by foot or boat.

Permission for the placement of this cache has been given by the Directors of the site This is the first in a series of caches along the navigable route of the Colne River. This one is placed at the site of East Mill http://www.camulos.com/postcards/page2.htm built in 1885, which has now been redeveloped into luxury apartments. The mill was used by barges until the road bridges made the navigation possible only for canoes - big boats can only get as far as the Hythe Bridge further downstream!!! It is in a urban and overlooked residential area so stealth is required if coming by foot. If you are doing the series by canoe Rouse Way is the best place to park. Put-in at the park opposite. The route is not suitable for walking in a day and spans both sides of the river so transport is required. The series follows the route of the Colne from here to the estuary. The other caches are placed midway at Rowhedge and at Brightlingsea. All are at suitable put-in and take-out points for canoes or can be reached on foot and mark interesting points along both sides of the river. Please bring a pencil / pen to sign it and any piccies would be great to see on the log especially if you do all 3 in one canoeing expedition!
