Geocache Description:

This is the tenth cache in our Charlotte, NC Neighborhoods series. Thanks to gbmcache for suggesting this area.

Villa Heights was built around the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries along what was Charlotte's northern border and was well served by streetcars even though it was not built to be a middle to upper income "streetcar suburb" such as Dilworth or Elizabeth. Although it contained textile mill housing, it was not the typical company-owned mill village as found on the other edges of Charlotte. Most of the residents used to walk to work in one of the textile mills or related industries that came to line the Southern Railway (now Norfolk Southern) tracks. Today it is hard to mention Villa Heights by itself; rather, it's now part of the Belmont-Villa Heights-Optimist Park area which was Charlotte's first entirely working class suburban district. As such, it is a reminder of this large group of people who with their labor helped advance Charlotte to its position as a leading textile producer during the textile boom decades of the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries.

If you haven't seen the NoDa district in the last ten years, this would be a fine opportunity. On your way to the cache pass through the intersection of Sugar Creek Road and North Davidson Street.
