Lake Bryndwr (Canterbury)

A multi in Nepal Place Reserve, adjacent to a new housing development, Westpark, which was once the site of Lake Bryndwr.
The Burnside and Bryndwr suburbs were developed post second world war, and much of the stone and gravel used for the driveways and paths were quarried from shingle pits by the Ashby Brothers. (The area is reputedly old Waimakariri river bed; we live close by and have ourselves “quarried” trailer loads of stones while digging garden beds!)
There were three pits fed by an underground spring. The main one, called Lake Bryndwr, was extremely deep, between 4.5 - 6 metres in depth with its water level related to rainfall over 20k west on the Canterbury Plains, as well as the level of the Waimakariri River. It was very cold, with lots of weed, and several people drowned in it. A motor racing circuit (1 ½ miles long) was built around it, and the lake became a much admired family recreational site.
Later, in the late 1960s, the major lake was filled in with rubble and old buildings, such as the BNZ Ch'ch building, and was used as a dumping ground (the recipient of many our trailer loads of stones).
***14/02/09 Have changed the location of the final after 2 mugglings during January. I hope this location is more secluded - especially "after hours".
