This cache is one of two caches that can be found on one of our favorite hikes in Cockaponsett State Forest. This one is a camouflaged, waterproof, match container so please bring your own writing implement.
Over the years, our families and friends have loved taking a walk in Cockaponsett SF that we call the Firetower Walk. It's a loop of about 3.25 miles and starts from a parking spot off Old County Road (N41° 25.609', W072° 32.321'). You begin by following the blue trail north to Jericho Road. The blue trail can be picked up just west of the parking area (N41° 25.609', W072° 32.334'). When you come to Jericho Road, go right for a short distance and then take a left and continue on the blue trail. Stay alert because shortly after you leave Jericho Road the blue trail goes off to the right and the red and blue trail goes straight. The blue trail loops around and eventually returns to Jericho Road a little distance to the east.
Along this section of the trail, you will pass the remains of a firetower's foundation (N41° 26.361', W072° 32.238'). Everytime I pass it, I think about how lonely it must have been sitting up in the firetower for days on end looking out over the forest.
When the blue trail returns you to Jericho Road, take a right and follow Jericho Road west about 0.6 mile until you come to the purple trail. Follow the purple trail south to the blue and red trail which will return you to the parking area. The purple trail crosses over the blue trail shortly before you come to the blue and red trail and you can follow that back if you desire.
The Connecticut DEP has a nice set of maps for the trails in Cockaponsett State Forest on their website, (visit link)
