Geocache Description:

Take a hike up South Table Mountain to enjoy spectacular views of Denver and Golden. Once you've reached the top, the walking is reasonably level. Terrain rating is 2.5 due to the hike.

This small poll bottle is a log-only cache. BYOP. The cache should be accessible in most conditions, even with 6" of snow on the ground.

About 100 yards to the north of this cache is an underground bunker (see photo) with a heavy steel door and a chimney. The bunker was built in the 1930s, and was used to store equipment for the trap shooting range on Adolph Coors' property. The shooting range is no longer used and has fallen into disrepair. The bunker is still used for teen parties, as evidenced by beer cans and charcoal littering the floor. IF YOU VISIT THE BUNKER, PLEASE LEAVE THE HEAVY DOOR AJAR SO RABITS CAN GET OUT — otherwise they die of starvation after falling down through the chimney. The range layout is clearly visible with aerial photos from Google Earth.

The terrain rating had been lowered to keep this cache available to those with a free plan. The terrain rating is more like 2.5 considering the hike required.

Update on January 24, 2009: Bonus: Inside the cache container are the coordinates of the Party Bunker. (It is not the tumbled down cinder block building you can see from the cache -- it's near there, but out of sight. A fence is in your way.)

Access:
* From the east: There is a trail head at the end of Foothills Circle Drive, which can be approached via 32nd Ave, south on Eldridge at the turning circle, then west on Foothills Circle and south on Old Quarry Lane.
* From the south: The top of the mountain is also accessible via Quaker Street north of South Golden Road.
* From the south: A trail begins just east of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, but don't use the NREL visitor parking. Instead, go east a bit to find a parking spot.
* From the west: A trail rises from the intersection of 18th and Belvedere St. near old-town Golden. (This access point is farthest from the cache.)
