Geocache Description:

A small cache on a beautiful small pond.

I thought that I would combine two of my favorite outdoor sports into one this winter. That is Geocaching and Ice fishing. Both sports have brought me to some beautiful places. I will probably post up a number of hides this winter as I work my way around to several of my favorite fishing holes.

My first ice fishing geocache is at a beautiful Cold Rain Pond in Naples/Sebago. This is a beautiful thirty eight acre pond stocked with brook trout. There are no camps on this pond. It is my understanding that the state has bought up all the land around the pond. According to the state they stocked 300 10” brook trout in 2008.

Fishing Report on day of placement: 1/4/09
Caught 2-14” brook trout (see gallery for picture), 4-8-10” brook trout(all released), 1-24” pickerel (released) and dozens of other pickerel(released). The flags were flying all morning long. The ice was about 8” thick.

Cache:
The cache is a small dry box with swag hidden near the lake. You may need the hints, so feel free to use them. Getting to the cache is no easy task and will require some walking in the woods. The cache may become inaccessible if we get a lot of snow. During the late spring and summer it is possible to drive down to the boat ramp where the cache is located.

Directions:
Take 302 to Naples. Once through the town of Naples you want to take a left on to Lake House Road. This is the first left after the 114 turnoff. You will travel Lake House Road to the stop sign. Across from the stop sign is the road that will lead you to the boat ramp on Cold Rain Pond. I would park along the main road (King Hill Road) as the abutting owners would prefer vehicles not go down the road in the winter. You will need to follow snowmobile trail through the field next to the road in. The trail connects back into the road just below turnoff to the abutters house. It is .67 miles from main road to the pond. The road is slippery this time of year and you may want to bring snowshoes or wear crampons. At about .4 miles you will see a fisheries sign on the left. You will want to follow the left trail to the pond. I have posted where the road branches off to the left as a trailhead. The cache is about 40” off the main trail near the pond. The ice is currently safe so if you have the time walk out on to the pond and look around.

You can also access the trail entrance by taking 114 to Sebago and turning off on to Jim Shaw Hill Road in N. Sebago.
