An ICM container hidden in Cedar Point Preserve.
If you look at a road map of this area, you might notice that Pumpkin Hill Road is within a hundred or so feet of this cache, making it practically a park-n-grab. Trying a drive-up here will lead to a rude awakening though- you'd better have brought your hiking shoes, as the closest pavement is quite aways back. What gives?
As former Jacksonville City Planner Michael Saylor explains:
"In this part of town there were a number of Spanish Land grants that go back hundreds of years. What were literally foot-trails or cattle-trails then were eventually called-out in subsequent land transactions as roads, and over time they became drawn as physical features on old surveys and maps, even if they no longer existed on the ground. In the 20th century some of these trails were picked-up in recorded subdivision plats as property boundaries or platted roads, or both. Many of these never got paved because they ran through wetlands or because of other
physical restrictions. But once they were platted they remained platted. They are today known as Paper Plats or Paper Roads and they are legally "grandfathered", meaning that if you have a plat or a survey or a deed that shows one of these roads connected to your property, the City will issue a building permit on it, even if it is not paved or graded."
So in honor of this section of former road-turned-hiking trail, this cache is named Paper Road.
Cedar Point Preserve is a 400+ acre park, part of the city of Jacksonville's Preservation Project. Cedar Point is located on Black Hammock Island, a barrier island within an intricate salt marsh ecosystem. In addition to the salt marsh, this site supports several other important communities; oak hammocks, pine flatwoods, and a freshwater marsh system. Forested areas within Cedar Point provide habitat for wildlife, including many wintering and migratory birds.
Parking is available at the trailhead access on Cedar Point Road. From there, over 7 miles of trails are available for hiking and exploration. Park rules are posted on signs as you enter the property. Hiking, horseback riding, and bicycling are all allowed; motorized vehicles are not.
