Site and cache are available during daylight hours year round, but house operates Wed-Sat 11am-4pm and Sun 1pm-4pm and is closed from mid-December to mid-February.

The Burwell School Historic site is a Hillsborough landmark. Built in 1821, the house served as a girls' school from 1837 to 1857 led by headmistress, Mrs. Anna Burwell. Alongside her husband, Rev. Robert Burwell, Anna would later greatly influence the development of Queens College in Charlotte. After Anna's death, Robert continued to advocate education for women. Robert and his son, John Bott Burwell, both assisted in the establishment of Peace College in Raleigh.

The Burwell House sits atop a hill, near the corner of Churton Street and Union Street. Parking is located behind the house on Union Street. The Burwell School is open to the public year-round except for a month during the winter, Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
