Geocache Description:

Plastic container located near the stray with a view of Roseberry Topping. The cache is also part of a series.

Roseberry Topping is the standout feature of the local countryside at 1094 feet (320m) high.

Travelling round the local area it still surprises me where you can see it from. This led to an idea of a Roseberry view series, where, dependant on the Teesside weather, you should be able to see Roseberry Topping.

This cache is located near the stray at Marske.

Car parking is available on the stray itself.

Roseberry Topping can be seen (Teesside weather!) South from the cache site, with the sea to the North and also for about half a mile as you travel down the coast road. It is triangular in shape and about 7 miles (by crow) from this cache.

The views from the car parking spot arent bad either from Redcar round to Huntcliff. We now have the addition of 27 wind machines under construction.

The road can get quite busy even though the official speed limit is 40 mph it used to be higher also there is a legitmate gap in the fence so no climbing needed.

The beach itself had seen a number of historical activities, including a land speed attempt by Malcolm Campbell (1922) and the taxiing tests (1909) and flight of Robert Blackburn's first monoplane on May 24th 1910 on the stretch between Marske and Saltburn. (visit link)

(thanks to Gallabers Travellers for the info)

Marske beach was also the site of a battle in the English Civil War. In 1643 Sir James Pennyman, 1st Baronet of Ormesby became Lord of the Manor and lived in Marske Hall . Pennyman was a Royalist, and created an army made of his tenants, which was involved in a battle against Oliver Cromwell's troops on Marske beach in 1643. His troops won the battle and drove Cromwell's troops back to their boats however following the final royalist defeat he was convicted for this delinquency and fined £1200,
