Gairo S.Elena
You will find Gairo nestling into the mountain side of the Pardu valley at an altitude of 690 m in a territory named Tacchi d’Ogliastra, a wild and unique place in Sardegna.
Gairo is of quite recent origins. The original village was destroyed by tremendous floods around the 1950’s, so the residents left the old town and moved up the mountain side where they rebuilt what they now call Gairo Sant’Elena and mountainous Gairo Taquisara. Evidence of the floods is left in the ruins of Gairo Vecchio, which you can wander around and try to recall the years gone by.

Il paese, il cui nome ha origine dalle parole greche "ga" e "roa", cioé "terra che scorre", per la sua precaria condizione idro-geologica, inizialmente era chiamato Gairo Vecchio, ma l'abitato colpito a più riprese da disastrose alluvioni, fra cui la più drammatica fu quella del 1951, e minacciato da progressivi cedimenti del terreno, è stato ormai abbandonato del tutto e l'intera popolazione si è trasferita nel nuovo paese, che, sorto più a monte, con il nome di Gairo S. Elena,
