The Lehigh Trail follows an old railroad spur that connected the Florida East Coast Railway to the former Lehigh Portland Cement Plant. A cement smoke stack is all that remains of the plant but users of the Trail are delighted with what it has become.
The completed section that winds through Graham Swamp is about 3.8 miles between Belle Terre and Colbert Lane. The pathway is a 12 foot wide swath of asphalt with a section 830 feet long that is a raised walkway over the wetter portions of the swamp.
Graham Swamp is a 3,000 acre preserve owned by the St. Johns Water Management District and managed by Flagler County. The preserve is on the eastern edge of Palm Coast and serves as a haven for all kinds of wildlife. The swamp also acts as a buffer and filter for coastal flooding for much of Palm Coast.
The Lehigh Trail brings those who venture through the swamp close to the wildlife while not straying too far out of the city. The $1.5 million to construct the project came from a Federal grant issued by the Florida Department of Transportation.
The trail is a good example of cooperation among government entities. To construct the trail Flagler County worked with the Department of Environmental Regulation, the State Department of Greenways and Trails, St. Johns River Water Management District, and the Department of Transportation. The County is also working with the City of Palm Coast. The city has plans to connect trails created in the city to the Lehigh Trail in the area of Royal Palms Parkway and Town Center.
A trailhead with parking is the next step in construction of the Lehigh Trail. The trailhead is in the design stage and should be ready for construction in the next few years. Another three miles of the trail is designed and permitted. Once constructed, that link will tie in the City of Bunnell to the path network. When complete the paths will connect Bunnell, Flagler Beach and Palm Coast together in a vehicle free transportation network.
