Geocache Description:

Mrs Moncur lived hereabouts and you may pass by the remains of her blackberry patch on your way to the cache!



Mrs Norma Moncur was unique in being the only woman in her day to be licensed to work as a vet. She and her brother practised south of Geranium. In the 1930s Mrs Moncur moved to Baan Hill and built a small hut with bag walls and a tar roof. The floor was hard clay and covered with linoleum. She grew a prolific garden with many flowers and vegetables. She had a rather ingenious way of protecting her garden from hungry kangaroos and emus: she kept dogs and cats chained in kennels around the garden to keep guard! She took her produce to Lameroo in a horse drawn cart but sadly, the horse died and in the late 1950s she was left with no way of getting into town and having to walk the five miles to the nearest neighbours. Locals ended up delivering supplies to her each week. The local spring dried up and the Lameroo Apex Club built her a rainwater tank. Mrs Monclur lived as a recluse until a few months before her death in December 1972. Although remnants of her garden remain, the area is gradually returning to a natural state and there are no buildings left to see. (Source: Mallee Tracks by Jill Nickolls and Ann Angel)
