This Watt Mast? Geocache is located near the site of the now-fallen Peacehaven Artillery Radar Station at Peacehaven Heights, East Sussex. The cache is a 35mm film pot located at ground level.
Please note that this cache replaces the original Peacehaven Radar cache (GCRXZA).
Ok ok, I guess it should really be Watt Radar? but that doesn't match the name of this series of caches.
This is the original text:
Peacehaven Radar Geocache is located near the site of the now-fallen Peacehaven Artillery Radar Station at Peacehaven Heights, East Sussex.
The station was built and used during WWII to target guns located at Newhaven on to incomming enemy vessels.
The remains of the Radar station stood on the cliff top for some 60 years before falling in to the sea sometime around 2003. All that remains is the generator room (now an electricity substation) and some lumps and bumps where the other buldings in the complex stood. You can also see the concrete posts which would have held the enclosure surrounding the station after it was abandoned.
Located right on the cliff edge at Peacehaven Heights, the station would have had a commanding view of the English channel. It was protected by an Anti-Aircraft battery to the rear of the site and by additional defences which were cleared to make way for the caravan park.
The cache is a small click-lock plastic box approx 5"x4"x3" and is suitable for SMALL swapsies. It contains First, Second, Third and Fourth place certificates, log book, pencil, stashnote and a few gifts to start the ball rolling. It should be easy to find - there is no clue for this cache. The spot is quite exposed so you'll need to be quick to avoid being spotted by dog walkers etc.
Suggested route to get to the cache (just over 1 mile round trip):
Park on the main coast road in the on-road spaces at N50 47.278 E000 01.114 or on one of the surrounding residential streets - for example Seaview Road (please park curteously). From your parking space, make your way towards the sea and on to the "Promenade" (see (visit link) From there, walk in an easterly direction along the Promenade to the end and through the slip gate at N50 47.123 E000 01.120 on to the clifftop path. PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO FENCE BETWEEN YOU AND THE EDGE OF THE CLIFF. If you intend taking pets or children, please ensure they are supervised at all times. Shortly thereafter are steps down on to the undercliff walk. You do not need to take these for this cache, but they do make a very pleasent walk! - indeed you'll need to come back up them as the undercliff does not have further access steps in the direction of the cache.
Stick to the clifftop path until you come to the Radar site and the associated Cache.
If you want a longer walk, why not park near "Big Mouth's Burgers" and take in the Peacehaven Greenwich Meridian Cache (GCKZRK) before walking along the Promenade to the cache site.
From the cache site, you can continue along the clifftop path as far as Newhaven Fort (well worth a visit). External to the fort are 3 gun pits and Newhaven's Radar station.
For further information on Peacehaven Radar station, see Martin F Mace's book "Sussex Wartime Relics and Memorials" - sadly now out of print, but available from libraries ISBN 1-901313-01-8.
Please note: I am very happy for fastkeys38 to replace and re-activate the original cache if he/she wishes to.
PS: if you have a four-wheel drive vehicle, and don't mind scratching your paintwork, it is possible to drive to within 25m of the cache.
