ABOUT THIS LOCATION

This Earthcache will bring you to Glacial Cone Park, a City of Waukesha Park. It is a 25.09 acre natural open space located on the west side of the City. You must approach from either Madison Street or the corner of Madison and Comanche Lane as it is surrounded on the other three sides by homes. The park hours are sunrise until 10:00 PM. Please, no after hours visits so we may continue to geocache in the City of Waukesha Parks. Suggested parking near N 43 00.710 W8 16.810

GEOLOGICAL INFORMATION

There were four major stages of Ice Age Glaciations that left their mark on the topography and soils of Wisconsin. The last stage, called the Wisconsin stage, ended approximately 10,000 years ago. When the great glacial ice sheet that covered this area began to melt, streams spilled down through the holes, intersections and crevasses to the base of the ice carrying with it, run off materials. As more materials were washed into the hole, the Kame grew in size. As the glacier retreated or melted away, it left behind this large hill that is cone shaped.

Special thanks to: Waukesha Parks, Recreation and Forestry for permission to place this Earthcache. It was created for the 5th Annual Waukesha Winter JanBoree Event to be held on Saturday, January 24, 2009 – GC1JA1E.

While pursuing this Earthcache, be sure to search for the "Glacial Cone Workout" multi-cache GCE6C6 also hidden in this park. The cache owners, TheHappyWanderers also gave permission for this EarthCache.

Enjoy your visit!

To log this earthcache, you must complete TWO tasks.

1) Take an elevation reading at the street level, then climb to the top of this Glacial Cone to take a second reading. From your numbers, estimate the height of this Kame. Please consider your safety with the weather conditions (ice and wind chill.) EMAIL me your answer at the time you post your FOUND IT log. The view from the top is well worth the trip! If you are unable to climb to the top due to weather conditions or physical limitations, a photo at the base of the Kame will be accepted. Please do your best to estimate the height - just let me know with your email.

2) BRING YOUR CAMERA. We would like a photo of your team with your GPSr showing the Glacial Cone, you are welcome to include the view from the top. However, if you are solo caching, a photo of your GPSr with enough of the location in the background that can be identified, will also be accepted. Please upload your photo(s) with your "found it" log.

(photo taken at N 43 00.710 W8 16.810)

Please be advised, failure to complete the TWO tasks listed above (emailing the answer and posting your photo AT THE TIME OF YOUR FOUNG IT LOG will result in log deletion without notice.

You do NOT have to wait for confirmation from me before logging your find. Please do not make any reference to your answers in your log.
