Geocache Description:

History has always fascinated me, and after talking with alot of cachers, they seem to be interested in local history as well. This region is very rich in history, some can still be experienced, while alot has been destroyed or covered by time and development.

This cache has been placed in an area which used to be the site of a village which boasted a population of nearly 200.

Around 1876, the village of Homer, which was located along the Ten Mile Creek, was home to many families, of which farming was a major occupation.

Being only 3 miles to the east from the bustle of the mighty city of St. Catharines, it was still far enough away to be remote, while still having the proximity to many ammenities that a big city offered.

As time progressed and the industries of St. Catharines and many of the other cities in the region continued to flourish, the existing 3rd Welland Canal was becoming obsolete as ship traffic became more prominent and the size of the ships became larger.

The Fourth Welland Canal was proposed and construction began in 1913, unfortunately for the residents of Homer, the path of this new canal went right through their village.

It is much easier to relocate 200 people than to re-route a massive engineering project, so the path remained unchanged and the quaint little village of Homer was razed. All that remains to show evidence of this village is the Homer Cemetary and a few unrelated buildings and ruins.

This cache is a regular tupperware container with room for trackables and trade items. It is located in an area which is frequented by ATVers, so be careful when searching for this cache as they do not usually pay attention to their surroundings as I was almost hit by one who was seemingly out of control in the snow and ice.
Also, be wary of any ice...it may not be thick enough to support your weight or it's stability might have been compromised by the ATVers driving their vehicles on the ice.

Hope you enjoy the hike, history and hide!
