A magnetic nano cache. Third in a series of 3 along the Colne River. Accessible by foot or boat.
This is the third in a series of nano caches along the navigable route of the Colne River. This one is placed at the Hard in Brightlingsea which has a long maritime history and is a great place to go sailing from or just sit and watch the boats. Kids spend their days crabbing off the newly installed floating pontoon. This is the main place in Brightlingsea to put in and the Hardmaster does charge, but often looks sympathetically on canoes as he does less so on big powerboats. A ferry operates from the hard over to Point Clear and Mersea Stone in the summers weekends giving access to some other caches across the estuary. http://www.brightlingseaharbour.org/ Other places places to put in are at Batemans tower and at the steps by the sailing club but be aware the slipway here is for members only. If you are doing the series by canoe, The creek running up to St Osyths makes a enjoyable meander when the tide is right and you can often short cut the mud flats. The Pyefleet up to the causeway across to Mersea allows almost swallows and amazon-esque escapism. The series follows the route of the Colne from Colchester to the estuary. The other caches are placed at the head of the Navigation and at Rowhedge. All are at suitable put-in and take-out points for canoes or can be reached on foot and mark interesting points along both sides of the river. Please bring a pencil / pen to sign it and any piccies would be great to see on the log especially if you do all 3 in one canoeing expedition!
