S:ta Katarina kyrka invigdes första advent 1997. En röd klockstapel som stått norr om kyrkan brändes ned till grunden 2007 och klockorna förstördes. Den nya klockstapeln har byggts under hösten 2008 med tre fast monterade klockor. Ringningen sker genom att kläppen (hammaren) slår mot klockans sida och därigenom framställer ljud. Hammarna ställs in så att de slår i olika fart för att åstadkomma olika hastighet på klockklangen. Den största slår långsammast, den mellersta slår lite snabbare och den minsta slår snabbast. Varje klocka har sin egen stämma och psalm - den stora klockan är stämd i D (psalm 1), mellanklockan i G (psalm 171) och lillklockan är stämd i A (psalm 21 "Måne och sol, vatten och vind och blommor och barn skapade Gud...").
Klockorna är gjutna i Holland i Petit Fritsens klockgjuteri, som ligger i byn Aale Rikstel. Fritsens klockgjuteri har anor tillbaka till 1600-talet. Klockorna är gjutna i samma göt som gjordes endast för dessa tre klockor.
Klockorna kallar som regel till högmässa varje söndag kl 10 och under veckorna pågår en mängd olika aktiviteter i huset. S:ta Katarinakören övar varje onsdagskväll med tyngdpunkt i sakral musik under de stora högtiderna.
Den fjärde av den heliga Birgittas åtta barn, dottern Katarina, har fått ge namn åt kyrkan. När hon var vuxen nog att gifta sig (ca 13 år) tilldelades hon en man, som var bosatt på Eggardsnäs strax intill nuvarande Ekeby i Halla socken, nordväst om Nyköping. Därav kom Katarina att en tid bo i Södermanland. Redan vid 19 års ålder blev hon änka och kunde flytta till sin mor i Rom, något som hon hade längtat efter hela tiden. Återförenad med modern följdes de åt på pilgrimsresor bl a till det heliga landet. Efter moderns död genomdrev hon att Birgitta blev helgonförklarad i Rom. Några år senare, 1378, var det klart och Katarina kunde återvända till Vadstena för att där bygga ett birgittinerkloster. Katarina blev själv klostrets första priorinna.
The church St. Katarina was consecrated Advent Sunday 1997. The wooden bell tower was set on fire 2007 and the bells were destroyed. The new bell tower was built during autumn 2008 and mounted with three stationery bells from bellfoundry Petit & Fritsen, the oldest family owned business - dates back to 1660 - in the Netherlands. A few words worth consideration from their website where there is more to learn about the making of bells.
“Bells always have played a part in the weal and woe of mankind for centuries and still perform an indispensable function in our modern society. Who will not reflect awhile when the bells ring to announce a joyful or sometimes sorrow event. The sound of bells has become an essential part of our lives, something that we cannot do without. The “bronze-like” notes which are reaching us, first hesitantly, then slowly but surely and repeatedly, create a unique atmosphere and mood. The ringing of bells is of unforgettable beauty and full of meaning for everyone.
Often the question is raised as to whether it is simpler to hang a bell stationary with clapper for striking the bell. While much easier to do, the sound result is totally different. Two facts which govern the characteristic sound of a bell are not there then:
• When a bell swings toward you, the sound frequencies are slightly higher than when a bell swings away from you.
• The “mouth sound” of a bell is different when a stationary bell is struck or it is struck on its side or border.”
Here the three bells have each their own tune – D for the big bell, G for the middle and A for the little one - and interval of the strike with the longest for the big bell.
The fourth child of St Birgitta, the daughter Katarina has given name to the church. She lived for a few years about 25 km northwest of Nyköping. She enforced the canonization of her mother in Rome and later founded a convent in Vadstena about 150 km westward at Lake Vättern.
