Geocache Description:

This is the first in a series of micro's hidden in Brantford parks. All of them are stand-alone caches, and are not tied into a final stage. The reasons for placing these caches are to increase the number of caches hidden in the Brantford area, to provide cachers with a brief history of the parks they will be visiting, and to give cachers the opportunity to enjoy some of the beautiful surroundings in "The Best Blooming City" in Ontario! Please take a pen or pencil with you.

Some would think that size alone would be enough to label this tiny park "Tom Thumb Park;" however, there is much more to the story.

In the late 1800's this property was the site of the Buck Foundry. Part of the property was donated to the City for use as park land after the death of Philip Buck in 1925. This tiny park forms an entrance to the heritage district located along Brant Avenue and adjoining streets. The I.O.D.E. cenotaph, erected in 1919 to hounour those who had served in WWI, is a feature of the park (I.O.D.E. - Brant Chapter of the Imperial Order, Daughters of the Empire). The cenotaph was originally located in Armories Gore, but was relocated in the 1990's to facilitate redevelopment of the park in conjunction with the development of the Weston Property - the site of the Royal Bank in 1998.

In the 1930's Brantfordonians were absolutely crazy about miniature golf. So much so that the Brantford Expositor would post winning scores from the many tournaments that were played. Tom Thumb Golf Course was one of the three courses in town at the time, and when the city later purchased some additional land for use as a park the name Tom Thumb seemed very appropriate, therefore the name was kept.

Your GPS may tend to bounce around some in this area, mine did, so I took eight readings before I settled on the coordinates for this cache. When you log your find, would you also mention the coordinates you were reading when you made your find?

Please DO NOT walk THROUGH the flower beds. Cache may be accessed by walking around the flower beds. Beware of Muggles! Use extreme stealth during daytime hours!

Please do not shake branches or bushes. There is no need for that. Be gentle and please replace as found. Thanks!

Congratulations to "THE GO GETTERS" for FTF!
