A quick cache and dash.
While I stopped at the store for a snack I got to talking with the nice ladies here about geocaching. I was telling them that I really enjoy learning about local history as I hunt for the treasures. The owner, Carolyn, took me out back to show me some of the old sites and tell me of the history. The Butterfield Stage Line, running from Central City to Pueblo, passed through the property long ago while carrying the payroll for Fort Carson. In addition to the payroll, the stagecoach also carried various supplies. The nickname for the line was the "Buttermilk" line as the milk that was transported had turned to buttermilk by the time it made it to it's destination. Supposedly folks have found various Indian arrow heads along this route. A bit to the South West there is a historical marker. There is still a Butterfield family still living in the area up the hill. The Pine Nook Market took it's name from the original stagecoach stop across the road from the market where the cabins now stand. If you ask nicely, the ladies at the market will tell you even more about the area and maybe even walk you around to show you some of the historical sites.
