Geocache Description:

KIRK LAKE

On a rise of land between Kirk Lake, a small lake that you have likely seen from the Anthony Henday or the Yellowhead Trail, and a marshy area known as Freeman's Woods. Through a little bit of research, I uncovered the following tidbits about this area, specifically Kirk Lake (that I had always assumed was simply a very large storm pond).

  • At one time this lake extended as a marshy lake all the way to Big Lake, encompassing Horseshoe Lake (off 199 Street) and Kinokamau Lake (to the East)

  • Kirk Lake was named for Horace Kirk, the homesteader who lived on the land now known as Mooncrest Park.

  • Kirk Lake is used for canoe and kayak racing in the summer.

  • Kirk Lake is the second largest wetland area within the boundaries of the City of Edmonton

  • The West Shore of the Lake was almost completely rebuilt in to permit the development of the Anthony Henday Dr

  • Kirk Lake is very shallow and freezes almost completely solid in the wintertime, so there are no fish in the lake. However, there are numerous birds and riparian creatures that live here in the summer, and the area is a great area for birdwatching.

  • Kirk Lake is located within the "Transportation Utility Corridor", ensuring that it will not be developed in the future.

The cache itself is a medium sized lock & lock container placed for CARW2009.

This cache has been placed for CARW2009. Please do not seek it out before 9:00am, on Saturday, March 7, 2009.
