Driekloof dam Headrace intake structure Driekloof Dam, the upper reservoir of the Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme, is located in an arm of the Sterkfontein basin. Pumping from the Tugla River will first fill the Driekloof Dam and the water for inter-basin transfer will flow over the spillway into the Sterkfontein Dam. There will be a rapid fluctuation of water levels up to 22 m below full supply in the Driekloof reservoir over a weekly cycle of pumping and generation of electricity. The structure accesable from this point is the Headrace intake structure of the Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme, operated and maintained by Eskom. The headrace intake structure consists of two identical 46 m high gate towers with a common deck and access bridge designed for a load of 30t. At the bottom of each tower there is a 7,30 m high by 5,88 m wide opening for a set of sliding type maintenance stoplogs and a 6.95 m high by 5,34 m wide opening (or a wheeled emergency gate. Each of the two intakes is provided with an independent bellmouth and screens.
