The cache is a 2L screw top container painted black. Take an
unmarked turn off closest to what the GPS indicates. There is only
one tun off. After going of the R74, go passed the cache to turn
the vehicle and you may park in the road close to the cach on the
way out.
Driekloof dam Headrace intake structure Driekloof Dam, the
upper reservoir of the Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme, is
located in an arm of the Sterkfontein basin. Pumping from the Tugla
River will first fill the Driekloof Dam and the water for
inter-basin transfer will flow over the spillway into the
Sterkfontein Dam. There will be a rapid fluctuation of water levels
up to 22 m below full supply in the Driekloof reservoir over a
weekly cycle of pumping and generation of electricity. The
structure accesable from this point is the Headrace intake
structure of the Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme, operated and
maintained by Eskom. The headrace intake structure consists of two
identical 46 m high gate towers with a common deck and access
bridge designed for a load of 30t. At the bottom of each tower
there is a 7,30 m high by 5,88 m wide opening for a set of sliding
type maintenance stoplogs and a 6.95 m high by 5,34 m wide opening
(or a wheeled emergency gate. Each of the two intakes is provided
with an independent bellmouth and screens.
