Kane Woods was purchased by the Scott Conservancy in 2003. In July 2008, the Conservancy opened a new network of trails, named for elements of the Whiskey Rebellion.
In the late 1700's, farming played a key role in the economy of Allegheny County. Because of transportation difficulties, farmers often distilled their excess grain into whiskey. During 1791, Congress approved a bill placing an excise tax on all distilled spirits in order to pay for the cost of the Revolutionary War. The tax proved to be extremely unpopular; most distillers refused to pay the tax while others rebelled violently, attacking tax collectors and their offices.
In July 1794, a group of "Whiskey Boys" marched through what is now Kane Woods and the surrounding area to Bower Hill, home of General John Neville, the Federal Inspector of Excise. After a two day confrontation, Neville escaped and his mansion was burned to the ground.
Cache is a small lock 'n lock container using typical Western Pennsylvania camo. Container can only hold small trade items. There is a one dollar lottery ticket for first to find.
UPDATED 1/20/2009 - After seeing others having trouble, a little bit more information for this cache. The cache is no more then 100 feet off the trail, depending on where you leave the trail. The cache is probably buried under a good bit of snow. When I was out at the cache site on the 13th, I took the GPS with me and verified our coordinates and the coordinates were spot on again. It might have been a 1 or 2 feet off, but nothing that dramatic. Because this seems to be a little bit more difficult that we orginally thought, I'm going to adjust the difficulty up to a half star as well.
