Geocache Description:

Cache is located on the grounds of the Smithfield plantation. Terrain is open and flat. An easy walk from parking.

This cache is located on the grounds of the Historical Smithfield Plantation. The cache contains a log book, a few pencils, a compass/thermometer keychain, 4 small figurines 2 knights,1 indian and 1 wild west man, some rulers w/ unit conversion tables, a small piece of fools gold and historical information about the founder of the plantation (former Surveyor of Fincastle County)

Fincastle County was created in 1772 from Botetourt County, whose boundaries extended all the way to the Mississippi River. Fincastle County was abolished in 1776, and divided into three new counties - Montgomery Country, Washington County, and Kentucky County (which later became the Commonwealth of Kentucky).

The name remains on Virginia maps with the town of Fincastle, the county seat of the original Botetourt County.
