Geocache Description:

This is our fourth of five caches along one of the Lymm Heritage Trail Walks. This place is simply stunning! To find it so close to the centre of Lymm is fantastic & in such near proximity to a great chippy is a bonus!!!
On leaving Slitten Gorge turn right up Dane Bank Road, then first left into Lymmhay Lane, follow it down to the bottom. Cross onto the dirt track & then turn left onto the Trans Pennine Trail to find our next cache.

Slitten Gorge takes it's name from the slitting mill that was situated here. It is not known exactly when it was built, but it was definitely in operation in 1751 when it was mentioned in Land Registry forms.
Slitting mills were used in the 18th century to roll out thin sheets of wrought iron & then cut them into narrow strips that could be used to make a range of objects.
Lymm Slitting Mill was one of an important group of mills in the NW of England & the remains here are the best surviving example in England.
It is home to birds such as coots, moorhens & mallards. If you are lucky you may see a heron & it is claimed kingfishers have been spotted here, although we have never seen them ourselves.

CONGRATS to Zeetee for finding our cache, we just can't keep up with you!
