Geocache Description:

The Butt Well is situated on the lower Back Walk which can be accessed from either the Smith Art Gallery, from Royal Gardens by the Kings Knot or from the parking at Stirling Castle Views
The cache is located near the Spring source.

Very little is known about the origins of the well. It appears to be a natural spring and there is still water coming out here. The Butt Well was known as the Spout Well in 1582. It has been suggested that it got its name from the archery butts which were set out on the Kings Knot nearby.
From Stirling Castle Views walk across the field at the Kings Knot towards the steps. Here you will see the more modern stonework and a pipe which was in use until the 1950's but sadly is no more.
If you carry on up the steps to meet the Upper Back Walk and go past the wall to your left you will see the source of the Spring. The cache is located here.

The cache is located close to the Back walk which was built in the 18th Century. It is regarded as one of Europe's finest urban walkways. The Back Walk is the oldest publicly maintained road in Scotland. It starts in Stirling centre at Robert Burns and Stirling's Statues and follows the old city walls up to the castle and then runs around the base of the Castle Rock and back up to the Old Town. There is a lower walk which goes from the Smith Art Gallery round to Ballengeich Road near the Fire Station. There is a footpath from near the top of the Ballengeich Road (Ballengeich Pass) which continues over to Gowan Hill and the beheading stone. *Congratulations to Robert Burns of being First to Find*
