In 1854-55 Augustus Charles Gregory sailed his schooner, the Tom Tough, up the mighty Victoria River. On the journey upstream the schooner sustained damage and apparently wood suitable for repairing the ship was found on the banks of what’s now known as ‘Timber Creek’.
A base camp or ‘depot’ was established on the banks of the Victoria river and Gregory and his party of 17 men, among them a botanist, naturalist, geologist and an artist explored the area extensively over the next 16 months. To this day a ‘Boab’ or ‘Bottle tree’ at the site still bears the date ‘2nd July 1856’ that was carved upon it so long ago.
It can be accessed from a track which runs from a cairn on the Victoria Highway.
The cache is located at an information ‘shed’ at the beginning of the track. Be sure to read up on all the history.
