Geocache Description:

Special thanks to worriedman for helping with this cache. We placed it, but somehow the coordinates got lost. Worriedman was very kind to send us the coordinates after a local led him to the cache site.

Kyles Ford is an unincorporated community in Hancock County in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is located at the base of Clinch Mountain along the Upper Clinch River and houses the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency's Kyles Ford Wildlife Management Area. A portion of Kyles Ford is included an 850-acre (3.4 km2) parcel of land referred to as the Kyles Ford Preserve. The parcel was acquired by TWRA in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and other conservation groups in a combined effort to preserve the area's rare, threatened, and endangered species of freshwater mussels. The concerned area of the Upper Tennessee River watershed that includes the Powell River Tributary, contains the most biologically diverse concentration of freshwater mussels in the Continental United States. It is also among the most degraded and threatened concentrations of mussels, containing some species that are globally unique. (Source Quoted: (visit link)

Nature Conservancy states, “Kyle's Ford Preserve, in Hancock County, is a shallow section of the Clinch River containing 35 mussel species. The Clinch River sustains 48 imperiled and vulnerable species, 39 varieties of rare mussels, and 19 species of fish. In addition, at least 50 globally rare cave animals, including beetles, spiders, flies, and other insects inhabit a network of some 1,250 caves beneath the preserve.” (visit link)

A very old highway bridge, along with its new replacement, spans the Clinch River here, and beside it is an old store, recently renovated, that now serves as a restaurant and showcases locally produced foods, arts and crafts. The Cabin Window quilt square is on the store. Just north of the store, Joe Alder Road drops off down an incline on the same side of the road as the store. The cache is located adjacent to the road at the former site of the Kyles Ford feed and seed store that also served as the post office in days gone by.
